They Poured Fire On Us From the Sky: The True Story of Three Lost Boys From Sudan, by Benson Deng, Alephonsion Deng, and Benjamin Ajak with Judy A. Bernstein

Co-author Benjamin Ajak is one of 30,000 lost boys and girls of Sudan who were left orphaned by the civil war that broke out in that country in 1983. He will recount his horrific 1,000 mile journey at age 5 from his war ravaged country to a refugee camp in Ethiopia where he saw many children die of disease, starvation and exhaustion. He and Authors photohis cousins Alephonsion and Benson Deng arrived in the United States as part of an international refugee relief program.

Judy Bernstein, volunteer mentor the San Diego International Rescue Committee, encouraged the boys to narrate their experiences in the book, They Poured Fire on Us From the Sky. For more information, go to theypouredfire.com.

Author and Journalist Robert Scheer @ Escondido Public Library

Robert Scheer, considered by some as “one of America's most admired journalists”, will be speaking in the Turrentine Room at the Main Library on Saturday, July 26th @ 3:00 pm. Scheer has written seven books ; in his latest book, The Pornography of Power: How Defense Hawks Hijacked 9/11 and Weakened America (2008) , Scheer examines the expansion of America's destructive military influence throughout the world including our current presence in Iraq. 

This event is free and open to the public. Books will be available for signing and sales. Reservations are not required; however, early arrival is encouraged to ensure seating.

 

The Wizard Rockumentary

The Wizard Rockumentary Join us for a free screening of the documentary Wizard Rock: A Movie about Rocking and Rowling. Twin sister filmmakers Mallory and Megan Schuyler traveled the country to explore the world of wizard rock - music inspired by the Harry Potter books. Check out the website to watch the trailer. Local wizard rocker Marked As His Equal will be opening the event.
