Bravo Foundation
Provided funding to support operations at the Literacy Annex and
had provided trained instructors for "From the Classroom to the Workplace"
series for job readiness training for our learners.
California Literacy
Statewide coalition supports literacy efforts across the state.
Has provided program development assistance, oversees the MEDALS Fellows
program which provides training and leadership to California literacy
programs. Facilitated networking and training opportunities.
Sponsor of the Cities That Read Campaign, which was supported by Escondido Mayor
Lori Holt-Pfeiler and the City of Escondido.
California State Library
Provides funding for special programs, donates books for book
giveaways, facilitates networking and training opportunities for library
literacy programs and promotes advocacy across the state on behalf of
literacy efforts.
City of Escondido : Community Development Block Grant
Provided funding to develop and implement a literature-based drama
program for Grant Middle School Students. The program is entitled,
"Literature Alive" and utilizes performance to improve literacy skills
and provide students the opportunity for creative self-expression.
Provides referrals for parents and their children (ages 0-5) to
Escondido Public Library Literacy events such as Families for Literacy
Nights.
Escondido Union School District
Through the State Library funded English Language Literacy Intensive
(ELLI), Library Literacy staff went into the classroom to help improve
literacy skills of 4th and 5th grade second language learners.
Curriculum included arts and crafts, drama, and workplace literacy
courses. Training included working with parents of ELLI students in
gaining computer literacy. Schools involved in the project included
Central, Pioneer, Lincoln, Felicita Elementary Schools, and Grant and
Del Dios Middle Schools.
First 5 Escondido
Escondido Union School District's state-funded program prepares
children from low-income neighborhoods for kindergarten. We provide book
giveaways and literacy activities through our monthly Families for
Literacy nights.
Friends of the Escondido Public Library
The Friends consistently and generously support literacy efforts by
providing resources and materials to meet the growing needs of the
Escondido community. They have been instrumental in funding electronic
keyboards (AlphaSmarts) to help learners gain typing, spelling and
mathematical proficiency.
Palomar College
Conducts College Based English Tutoring (CBET) on library site.
Supported by bilingual computer classes through Library Literacy
Services and early literacy services to preschool children of program
participants.
San Diego Council on Literacy
As a member of the Council on Literacy, Library Literacy has
benefited from training and networking opportunities, funding for staff
and annex operations, and support in developing and facilitating
literacy programs. Through a federal grant, two Americorps members have
been placed with the program to provide direct tutoring services to
learners, program development assistance, and the energy and enthusiasm
of young people committed to literacy and social justice.
Target Foundation
Provided funding for outreach to women and their children living in
shelters. Services include one-on-one tutoring, storytelling and book
giveaways to the children.
Woman's Club of Escondido
Provided funding for our Born to Read Campaign wherein Library
Literacy staff have visited Palomar Hospital with gift packets
consisting of Born to Read bibs, hats, literacy information, in both
English and Spanish, and board books for the new baby.
