The public library is an ideal setting for Workplace Literacy Services. Our centralized location in the city of Escondido is easily accessed and our new Literacy Annex provides a congenial, information-rich environment in which adult learners can thrive.
Workplace Literacy Services strives to empower learners with reading, writing, English speaking, computing, problem solving, communicating, and soft skills that prepare the individual to be effective at work, home and in the community.
Workplace Literacy Services include:
Computer Classes
- Current software technologies: ESL, typing, speaking, GED, reading in the workplace, Internet, email, and Microsoft Suite training coupled with one-to-one tutoring in the Literacy Laboratory provides supplemental skill improvement.
- Resume and job search strategies.

From the Classroom to the Workplace
- This innovative program provides selected learners with 6-8 week
training sessions, focusing on on-the-job skill preparation. The
training is presented by and financially supported through
professionals from the local business community. Furthermore, the
program places an emphasis on providing adult learners with applicable
workplace training in the classroom and 100% successful transition
into the workplace by way of Internships with local community
partners.
Classes include:
- Clerical Series I: Presented by The Bravo Foundation
- Real Estate Training: Presented by Bowman Real Estate
Internships with Community Partners include:
- Farmers Insurance
- Hispanos Unidos Newspaper
As a result of customizing the learning
environment, adults learn what they need to learn, at their own pace,
and in-turn become more highly skilled employees who are more productive
and reliable. This correlates to improving the economic development of
our community as low-skill, low-income employees gain higher wages,
improved job-security, promotions and heightened job satisfaction and
self-esteem.
Values:
-
Well Situated for Learning
The literacy annex is a complete tutor-learner environment equipped with a literacy library, fictional reading collection, workplace literacy tutoring material, "Reading in the Workplace CD-Rom series", Alphasmart typing machines, 3 quiet tutoring/learning rooms, 1 large discussion area, ample parking and on-sight staff ready to assist any learning needs.
- Learner Goal Oriented
Workplace Literacy Services incorporates the “Equipped for the Future†standards-based approach to instruction (National Institute for Literacy), This framework helps the tutor and the adult identify goals in the following areas: family, citizen, and worker roles. The EFF approach provides initial goal setting so that students with work-related goals use the worker role map and standards to identify their employment goal, to assess their learning needs in relation to their goal, and to develop an individual learning plan that is tailored to achieving that goal.
- Inclusive of English as a Second Language
The primary focus of the Adult Literacy Program is literacy for English speaking adults, yet the Escondido Public Library supports ESL adults and children through programs that provide support in the acquisition of English, such as Community Based English Tutoring (CBET) and ESL computer classes. These critical services help adults improve their reading and writing skills so they can reach their potential as workers, parents, community members and life-long learners.
- Learner-Centered and powered by Volunteer Involvement
The key to the success of these services is that they’re provided in a one-to-one or small group setting by trained volunteers and Instructors. As a result, a customized approach can be taken with each adult. This individualization means that adults learn what they need to learn, at their own pace, and are able to directly apply their new skills to their lives. Workplace literacy staff provides outreach and support services such as recruitment, initial and ongoing training, and coordination of volunteer tutors and learners.
