Chitra
Banerjee Divakaruni Divakaruni was born in
Calcutta, India in 1956 where she lived until 1976 before moving to the
United States. She received a Masters in English from Wright University
and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. She resides in
the Bay Area to this day with her husband and two sons and teaches at
the Foothill College in Los Altos.Her publications include poetry, short stories, fiction and children's books. Her work is notable for its portrayal of Indian immigrant women in the United States. Critics often remark on her unique and beautiful prose and eye for detail. First-time readers may get a good introduction to this author by sampling her short story collections, Arranged Marriage and The Unknown Errors of Our Lives. In The Mistress of Spices, the author plays with reality a bit as she tells the story of an Indian woman with magic powers who works in grocery store in Oakland, selling customers spices to deal with feelings of homesickness. Sister of My Heart introduces readers to two cousins who with a very close bond. Their story is continued in Banerjee's The Vine of Desire. Her latest novel, Queen of Dreams, tells the story of Rakhi, the owner of a Berkeley bookshop, and her mother, a woman gifted with the ability to interpret people's dreams. One scene illuminates the racism that has confronted many immigrants since 9/11. In addition, Banerjee recently edited a collection of stories called California Uncovered about life in California including works by John Steinbeck and Maxine Hong Kingston.
