Khaled
Hosseini Khaled Hosseini was born in Kabul, Afghanistan in 1965, the first of
five children. His mother was a teacher at a girls' high school and
his father was a diplomat. In 1976, his father was assigned to the
Afghan embassy in Paris, France, so Khaled's family relocated there.
The assignment ended in 1980, but by then Afghanistan had already
been invaded by the Soviets. Khaled's family sought and was granted
political asylum in the U.S.; they landed in San Jose, CA. Hosseini
attended Santa Clara University and graduated from UC San Diego
School of Medicine. He has been practicing internal medicine since
1996. He is married and has two children. In The Kite Runner, Hosseini returns to the pre-Soviet Afghanistan of his childhood and relates his feelings for a servant who had lived in the household, a man who taught him to read and write. The novel spans four decades and explores Afghan culture in the idyllic pre-war years as well as the Afghan diaspora in California, the relationships of fathers and sons, and the themes of guilt and redemption.
