Haruki
Murakami Born in 1949, Haruki
Murakami enjoys cult status in his native Japan. The strange parallel
worlds created in his novels and his break from traditional Japanese
literature have made him popular among younger generations.
Murakami has always loved Western novels by authors such as Raymond Chandler, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway. His love for American detective novels is also evident in his work, although some of his works can even be described as science fiction. His protagonists tend to be men on some sort of quest who encounter interesting characters along the way. While Wind-Up Bird Chronicle was the first book to really capture the attention of American readers, fans often recommend Murakami newcomers read Norwegian Wood for a good introduction to his work.
