( ( (  The Immigrant Experience  ) ) )

Exile, diaspora, hybridity, belonging, displacement, homeland, home, nostalgia, national and communal identity, and the relationship between personal and collective memory. These themes and more are explored in immigrant literature. Whether your people came here one generation ago or ten, there were things to let go and things to hold on to. Compromises were made. It all adds up to American culture.

Many authors write about the immigrant experience in America.  People from every culture face the difficulties of becoming American, including generational conflicts, culture shock, and sometimes racism.  Learn more about these people and the joys and sadness they experience while adopting their new homeland.
